Motivation...

For the past few weeks, I've struggled a bit with motivation so I'm going to give you my ways of regaining motivation. Being a year 12 student, there is not really much room to lose focus and procrastinate. I feel like many of us tend to lose focus and motivation around the middle of the year. Maybe it's because we are so overwhelmed by what's ahead, maybe we're just starting to lose steam, or maybe we have had too many disappointments/ stress/ let downs. For me, school has been a struggle. The pressure, competitive environment and the continual disappointments and let downs have really crushed my motivation. Sometimes it's just easier to stop but life doesn't wait for us and we've got to just keep pushing on. Especially over the last two years, I've learnt a few ways of picking myself back up that work for me and hopefully for you too!

Food, glorious food:
For me, food is my biggest motivation to do anything, whether it be school work, cleaning the house or going out somewhere. I eat food when I am sad and disappointed and it works really well as a pick me up. Often when we feel unmotivated, it comes from lack of energy. Eating food you love will not only bring your energy levels back up but also make you feel happy again. Although it is really tempting to just take any random junk food from the pantry, it is better to pick something healthy. Preparing healthy snacks and making them more accessible helps to reduce the temptation of eating something unhealthy. Replacing chocolate with a frozen banana or replacing chips with nuts is not only healthier but also will satisfy your cravings and keep you fuller for longer. That way you won't get distracted by your cravings!

Follow what your heart wants:
Picking a little hobby to do may sound absurd. But having that little bit of down time may actually save you a lot of time. Pick something productive such as reading or baking so that when you find yourself losing focus you can do a little of your hobby and feel refreshed rather than procrastinating for the whole day and not doing anything. I personally love baking so I like to make some baked goods such as cookies and then my family and friends also benefit! Then I feel refreshed and motivated and ready to do some work. Especially with all the social media, procrastinating is so easy. Finding time to just do something not related to technology that will actually benefit you will really help to put things back into perspective.

Long term goals:
I've also found that thinking long term really helps me to maintain focus and motivation. Every time I feel unmotivated I always ask myself why I'm doing the task. For example, as my year 12 formal is coming up, I find myself feeling more motivated to do more exercise and to eat more healthy. Another example is school. As cliché as it sounds I always to remind myself that the HSC is not the "be all and end all". With all the pressure and discussion about the HSC sometimes it's hard not to get caught up in the whirlwind of everything. I find that taking a step back from it all every now and then and reflecting on what I really want to do in the future helps me to see things in perspective. Putting things into perspective really helps me to not feel as overwhelmed and to just go where life decides to take me.

In the end, the most important thing is to listen to your body and yourself and what you want. Pushing yourself too far can result in a lot more time spent picking yourself up. Sorry about the ramble but I really hope this helps to pick you back up and to take anything that comes at you in your stride and to not be afraid of taking a step back every now and then!
